I promised you Last.Fm'ers I'd be back Journal'ing soon and lo and behold I lived up to my word.
So my musical tastes are unique to me, but then I think that's true of everyone.
So far, so humdrum
Where I take a slight left turn from what is considered the norm is my taste in cover versions.
I don't like to pin down my taste in music to any one genre but I think it's safe to say my taste is something along the lines of "alternative"
And yet occasionally, a mainstream song will have a catchy hook that just gets stuck in my head and I'll try to convince myself I don't like it because it is so not the done thing for someone with such a refined taste in music to like pop songs.
That's where the cover versions come in, sometimes it's a way of justifying the liking of a song even if I'm not a fan of a particular artist, other times it is because the cover version is so different to the original song it's worth keeping a hold of.
Permit me, dear last-ener, to furnish you with examples of which I type:
Number 1, Madbones: All the Thing She Said
All The Things She Saidyoutube link
Tatu, in the early part of the last decade, represented a cynical music industry trying to sell their songs by getting two teenage girls to kiss in schoogirl uniforms in the video.
It's almost like the song was secondary to this notion, yet in the end the song itself is actually quite good.
Enter Madbones, an Italian punk band, to do the song justice without any of that marketing shtick
Example number 2 Out Of Date Whenever, wherever
Sorry about the video, but it's the only version that wasn't a live recording
Shakira, an artist who I'm never going to like despite her pop/panpipe combination, put out a stupid catchy song.
Out of Date did it better, with guitars and attitude and everything.
Do you see where I'm going with this now, Last-ers?
I think the whole point of it is when the pop music business occasionally gets something right, there will be enough bands out there to put out fun punk or rock cover versions to allow me to enjoy the song without having to deal with the whole issue of liking the artist. \
Whatever keeps my scrobble feed clean is good with me
There'll be more of these popping up here as I see fit, including the next instalment which will be devoted entirely to that meat-wrapped trying-too-hard brand of pop, Lady Ga, Ga.
Come back soon for that, same bat-time, same bat-channel!
